Lock out

Ever have one of those moments where the stars line up in the wrong axis? Yesterday I took EvanMies to Walmart to pick up nick-nacks. Typical store antics ensued where EM kept on trying to crawl out of the shopping cart and throwing her cankerous tantrum. No big deal - wheel down to the snack aisle and grabed a bag of Goldfish crackers and alleviated full-blown meltdown. Whatever. So we finally get out of the store and get to our car. As I was trying to load EM in the car, she whined for the car key - "tee ~ tee ~ tee!" Since giving her the car key while she roams through the car is our morning ritual, I gave her the key and didn't give it another thought.

Oops.

In my daddy-brain state of mind I didn't register the audible click of the remote lock that EM pressed. I closed her door, finished loading up the trunk, and closed the trunk door. Oops. As soon as the trunk closed I felt my stomach sink to my glucosamine starved knee cap.

EM looked out the window confused. "What the heck are you doing standing out there, Dadda?" she seems to say. Panic ensued. Fortunately this is February, not middle of August. I fumbled for my phone, realizing that EM locked me out and I have no way of getting inside. I flipped opened the phone to call my neighbor and saw that the battery marker showed zero bar. Oops. I quickly called Diane - no answer. I called Bonnie - no answer. I called Rosanna - no answer. Then the phone just went dead. Oops.

I looked around with a panicked look in my eyes. Fortunately a nice lady walking by saw me and gladly offered me her cell phone. She was all giggles when I called AAA for service and wished me luck. I stood there waiting like a dumb lamb. After 10 minutes I flagged a mall cop. He came with his supervisor and assessed the situation. The supervisor proclaimed that had this been middle of summer he would've broken the window in a second - wow, I'm glad we are protected by the finest.

The AAA tow truck came soon afterwards and the guy freaked out when he discovered that there was a baby in the car. He said he didn't get any red alert. Apparently baby stuck in car triggers an alert and they send every truck within a few mile radius. AAA man jacked up the window and unlocked the door within seconds. That was amazing. EvanMies was asleep from boredom so she missed all the excitement.
